  Presentation Summary

Since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, various Government initiatives have been implemented with the aim of improving the flow of funds to small firms. Although new forms of funding have emerged, lending to businesses has reduced every year since 2009. Within the study of entrepreneurship, the study of behaviour has been identified as an area requiring further exploration.

This presentation outlines the results of a 3 Year study into the use of psychometric testing in measuring the behavioural competences of a panel of sixty entrepreneurs in the UK Creative Industries sector. It is a longitudinal study within which quantitative results combine with three qualitative interviews identifying funding outcomes and behaviour associated with financing the small firm.

Some of the results discussed emphasise a strong behavioural characteristic towards engagement and working with other organisations. In a funding context, this manifested itself in using networks, seeking advice and sharing equity to fund growth. These co-operative, collaborative characteristics are different to the classic image of the entrepreneur as a risk-taker or extrovert. Leadership and achievement orientation were amongst the lowest scores.

Geoff will also present three distinctive groups of entrepreneurs which were identified and are shown by subsequent analysis to be a positive contribution to how entrepreneurial behavioural competences can be considered; and belonging to one of these three clusters is a strong predictive indicator of entrepreneurial behaviour – in this context, how entrepreneurs access finance. These Clusters were also proven to have different characteristics in relation to funding outcomes, funding types and use of advisors, for example.

For SME owners, financial institutions and organisations involved in the allocation of Government support to small firms, the presentation also outlines a methodology which enables the identification of competences which overcome some of the difficulties caused by information asymmetry between stakeholders. Central to the argument is psychometric testing can be used to explain and predict how individuals finance the firm.
