     Emerging Market MNEs and theories of the multinational enterprise

  ABSTRACT:

  Luo and Tung (2007) have argued that the foreign investments of emerging market MNEs (EMNEs) are a springboard to acquire the strategic resources needed to compensate for their weaknesses. But how can EMNEs, which are typically competing with foreign rivals in their home market, get the time and money to acquire these resources? I argue that Luo and Tung, along with the EMNE literature, have overlooked the fact that selling products and services requires bundling intangibles with complementary factors. Control of these complementary factors allows EMNEs to obtain the intangibles they need.

  Jean-Fran?ois Hennart’s research focuses on the comparative study of international economic institutions such as multinational firms from both developed and emerging countries, born globals, joint ventures and hybrids, modes of foreign market entry, and the internationalization of family firms. His Theory of Multinational Enterprise (1982) pioneered the application of transaction cost theory to international business. He is consulting editor for the Journal of International Business Studies, a Fellow of AIB and EIBA, and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Vaasa. In 2012 the Academy of Management named him the Booz&Co/Strategy+Business Eminent Scholar in International Management. His highly cited work in JIBS, the Strategic Management Journal, and other top journals, has garnered more than 14,000 citations.
